About the test
What is the Rice Purity Test?
It is a 100-question self-assessment that asks whether you have had certain experiences, from holding hands to breaking the law. Each "yes" lowers your score by one point from a starting score of 100.
Where did the Rice Purity Test come from?
It started at Rice University in Houston, Texas. The student newspaper published a purity test in 1924, and the test later became an orientation-week tradition for new students.
How long does the test take?
About three minutes for the classic 100-question version, and under two minutes for the 50-question versions.
Is this the official Rice Purity Test?
There is no single official version today. This is an independent, modern version with original question wording. We're not affiliated with Rice University.
Scores
How is my score calculated?
Your score equals the number of boxes you did not check. On the 50-question tests, the score is converted to a percentage so every test uses the same 0–100 scale.
What is a good Rice Purity score?
There isn't one. The score reflects experiences, not character. Every score is valid.
What is the average Rice Purity score?
It varies with age and with who is taking the test. You can see real-time averages from this site on our statistics page.
Can my score go up?
No. The test asks whether you have ever done something, so your score can only stay the same or go down over time.
Privacy
Are my answers saved?
No. Your individual answers stay in your browser and are cleared when you close the tab or press Clear. When you calculate, only your final score is sent so we can show how you compare.
Can anyone see my score?
Only if you share it. Scores are stored anonymously as a single number and are never linked to your name, email or device.
Do you use tracking cookies?
The test itself works without any cookies. See our privacy policy for details on any analytics we use.
