What is the Rice Purity Test?
The Rice Purity Test is a 100-question self-graded survey that asks whether you have ever had a range of common, and not-so-common, life experiences. Topics include dating, romance, intimacy, alcohol, drugs, partying and breaking the rules. You start at 100, and each box you check lowers your score by one point. The final number is your "purity score".
The test traces back to Rice University in Houston, Texas, where a version of it appeared in the student newspaper, the Rice Thresher, as early as 1924. Over the decades it became an orientation-week tradition: new students took the test to bond, laugh and realize that everyone arrives at college with a different story. Today it is one of the most-shared quizzes on the internet, especially on TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat.
How to take the test
- Read each question and check the box if the answer is yes: you have done it at least once.
- Leave the box empty if you haven't.
- Press Calculate my score at the bottom.
- See your score, what your range means, and how you compare to everyone else who took the test.
Be honest. Nobody sees your answers, and the number only means something if it's real. We store only your final score, without your name, email, answers or IP address.
How the score is calculated
Your score is simply the number of unchecked boxes. If you check 23 items, your score is 77. A score of 100 means you checked nothing, and a score of 0 means you checked everything.
| Score range | Label | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| 98–100 | Pure as Fresh Snow | Almost none of the experiences on the list |
| 94–97 | Wholesome and Sweet | A few first steps, like dates or a kiss |
| 87–93 | Innocent with a Spark | Some dating and light rule-bending |
| 77–86 | Curious but Careful | A typical teen or college social life |
| 65–76 | Balanced Explorer | Relationships, parties and some experimenting |
| 45–64 | Seasoned Adventurer | A wide range of experiences |
| 30–44 | Life of the Party | Most of the list, with a few wild nights |
| 20–29 | Wild Child | Very few items left unchecked |
| 9–19 | Living on the Edge | Nearly everything on the list |
| 0–8 | Seen It, Done It All | Practically every box checked |

What is a good Rice Purity score?
There is no "good" or "bad" score. The test measures experiences, not morality, intelligence, kindness or worth. A high score can simply mean you're young or careful. A low score can simply mean you've lived a lot of life. Most people find their score lands somewhere in the middle, and it naturally drifts down with age.
What is the average score?
Averages depend heavily on who is taking the test. Younger groups score higher, and older groups score lower. The original 1924 version reported an average of 62 among the women who took it. Today you can see the real distribution of scores from people who took the test on this site on our live statistics page.
Is the Rice Purity Test accurate?
It is accurate in one narrow sense: it counts which items you've experienced. It is not a scientific or psychological assessment, and it cannot tell you anything about your personality or your future. Treat it as a conversation starter, not a verdict.
