The classic Rice Purity Test was written for college students, so it's not a great fit for everyone. A 14-year-old, a teacher running an icebreaker and a couple on date night all need something different. This guide compares every version on our site so you can pick the right one.

The Classic Rice Purity Test

Who it's for: anyone 17 and older who wants the traditional experience.

The classic test covers the full spectrum: romance, intimacy, alcohol, drugs, rule-breaking and nightlife. It's the version people mean when they post their score online, and the one with the longest history. See our history of the test.

Why it's not for younger teens: many questions involve sex, alcohol and drugs. They're not appropriate for younger users, and the results wouldn't mean much anyway, because few of the items apply yet.

The Teen Purity Test

Who it's for: teenagers, roughly 13 to 17.

The Teen test keeps the fun of the format but replaces every mature question with everyday teen experiences:

  • Crushes, first dates and first kisses.
  • Sneaking out, breaking curfew and getting grounded.
  • Skipping class, detention and copying homework.
  • Secret social media accounts and group-chat drama.

Why it's better for teens: the questions actually reflect teenage life, so the score is more interesting. It also avoids pushing mature topics on younger users.

The College Purity Test

Who it's for: current students, incoming freshmen and nostalgic graduates.

It focuses on campus life: all-nighters, roommates, dining halls, parties, clubs, campus traditions and the occasional run-in with an RA. It's ideal for orientation-week icebreakers, which is where the original test became a tradition.

The Couples Purity Test

Who it's for: couples, answered together.

Instead of individual histories, it asks about shared milestones and adventures, such as saying "I love you", meeting the parents, moving in, and kissing at midnight. It's a great date-night activity. Read our couples guide for tips.

The Clean Purity Test

Who it's for: literally everyone, including kids.

Every question is harmless and funny. Have you ever eaten dessert before dinner? Pretended to be asleep? Walked into a glass door? It's perfect for classrooms, family game nights and workplace team-building.

The Adulting Purity Test

Who it's for: anyone navigating grown-up life.

Rent, taxes, burnout, overdraft fees and eating cereal for dinner. It's the relatable version for people in their twenties and beyond, and it's completely safe for any audience.

How to choose: a simple flowchart

  1. Under 13? → Clean
  2. 13 to 16? → Teen (or Clean)
  3. With a partner? → Couples
  4. In a group at work or school? → Clean
  5. In college? → College, then Classic
  6. Out in the real world? → Adulting, then Classic
  7. 17+ and want the original? → Classic

Advice for parents and teachers

Teens are going to see the Rice Purity Test on social media whether we like it or not. Rather than banning it, many parents and educators find it more effective to:

  • Point teens toward the Teen or Clean versions.
  • Talk openly about why a "purity" score doesn't define anyone.
  • Remind them never to share individual answers online.
