You just finished the Rice Purity Test and a number popped up. Now what? Is 82 a lot? Is 41 alarming? Is 99 embarrassing? This guide walks through every score range, explains what's typically behind it, and shows you how to interpret your result without reading too much into it.

First, how the number is built

The classic test has 100 questions. Your score starts at 100, and every "yes" subtracts one point. So your score is literally the number of experiences on the list you haven't had.

That has two important consequences:

  1. Every item counts the same. A first kiss and an arrest each cost one point.
  2. Different people can get the same score in different ways. One 70 might be mostly romance, and another 70 might be mostly rule-breaking.

Keep both in mind as you read the ranges below.

98–100: Pure as Fresh Snow

You checked two items or fewer. These are usually the gentlest questions, like holding hands or going on a date. Scores here are typical for young teens and for anyone whose values or circumstances have kept them away from parties and dating.

What it doesn't mean: that you're naive, boring or immature. Read more about the 98–100 range.

94–97: Wholesome and Sweet

You've had a few small firsts, perhaps a crush that turned into a date, a first kiss, or a late night out. This is still very much the high end of the scale. More on 94–97.

87–93: Innocent with a Spark

Some dating experience, a bit of light rule-bending, maybe a sip of alcohol at a party. Many high school seniors and first-year college students land here. More on 87–93.

77–86: Curious but Careful

This is one of the most common ranges for older teens and college students. It usually reflects relationships, parties and a few memorable nights, without many of the riskier items. More on 77–86.

65–76: Balanced Explorer

Now we're near the middle of the scale. People here have usually checked most of the romance items, have social-drinking experience and may have experimented a little. It's a typical result for people in their twenties. More on 65–76.

Fun fact: the average score reported for the very first purity test at Rice University in 1924 was 62, just below this range.

45–64: Seasoned Adventurer

A wide range of experiences across most categories, often including some substance-related or legal items. Very common for adults. More on 45–64.

30–44: Life of the Party

You've checked more than half of the list, including plenty of nightlife and some riskier items. Scores this low are less common among online test takers. More on 30–44.

20–29: Wild Child

Most of the list is checked. Only the most extreme items remain. More on 20–29.

9–19: Living on the Edge

Nearly everything is checked. Honest scores in this range are rare. More on 9–19.

0–8: Seen It, Done It All

Practically every box. Truly honest scores this low are very unusual, and some people score here as a joke. More on 0–8.

How to interpret your score (the healthy way)

Think about age first

Age is by far the biggest influence on a score. Many items, like dating, staying out late or traveling with friends, are simply things that happen as you grow up. A 15-year-old with a 95 and a 30-year-old with a 55 are both completely ordinary.

Look at which boxes, not just how many

If you want the score to mean something, look back at the items you checked. Are most of them in one category? Are any of them things you regret, or things you're proud of? That reflection is far more useful than the number itself.

Don't compare to a "target"

There's no target score. Trying to raise it (impossible) or lower it (not a goal worth chasing) misses the point entirely. Read more in Is the Rice Purity Test safe?.

Remember the context

The test was designed as a lighthearted icebreaker. It's not a personality test, a moral scorecard or a predictor of anything.

Frequently asked questions

What is considered a "pure" score?

On the test's own scale, scores in the 90s are considered very pure, and anything above about 75 is still on the innocent side.

What is a normal Rice Purity score?

"Normal" depends on age. Many college students report scores in the 60s–80s, and adults often score lower. See average scores by age.

Is a low score bad?

No. A low score means you've had more of the experiences on the list. It isn't a judgment of who you are.

Do scores on the Teen or Couples test mean the same thing?

They use the same 0–100 scale, but the questions are different, so the ranges describe different kinds of experiences.
